ZEROvia vs EcoVadis: Comparison for SMEs 2026

ZEROvia is the VS/VSME-native ESG infrastructure for SMEs up to 1,000 employees, hosted in Switzerland, with a public AEO-optimized ESG profile and private data packs from a single source.

EcoVadis is a global buyer-centric sustainability rating network. Both tools answer similar questions — but with fundamentally different data ownership, methodology, and target audience.

In short, ZEROvia is the better choice for SMEs that constantly need to process ESG inquiries from banks, insurers, and large clients while retaining ownership of their data. If a large client mandates an EcoVadis scorecard, use both: ZEROvia as the data foundation and EcoVadis for external validation. Since January 2026, EcoVadis recognizes VSME as a reporting standard — a ZEROvia-VSME report will flow directly into the EcoVadis assessment.

Overview: Two different logics

EcoVadis — Buyer-Centric Global Rating

EcoVadis is a French sustainability rating network founded in 2007. The logic: A Major client initiates evaluation, invites its supplier, the supplier answers an industry-specific questionnaire, EcoVadis analysts validate the answers, a score is awarded. The quality of sustainability management is assessed across three pillars (Policies, Actions, Results) and seven management indicators: Policies (POLI), Endorsements (ENDO), Measures (MESU), Certifications (CERT), Coverage (COVE), Reporting (REPO), and 360° Watch Findings. The scorecard is shared in the Buyer network.

ZEROvia — KMU-centric ESG Infrastructure

ZEROvia is a Swiss ESG platform for SMEs that flips the relationship: The SME manages its own ESG data model, once cleanly captured and controlled, it can be reused. This model generates two output worlds: a public, AEO-optimized ESG profile for visibility to answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity, as well as private reports, ratings, and data packs for banks, insurance companies, major clients, and auditors—released with field-level accuracy. No score without source evidence, AI governance by design, hosting in Switzerland.

Methodology in Detail

EcoVadis Methodology at a Glance

EcoVadis assesses the quality of a sustainability management system across three pillars—Policies, Actions, and Results—divided into seven management indicators. Four sub-themes are examined: Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement. The questionnaire is industry, size, and country-specific. EcoVadis analysts validate the responses and create a scorecard with a score from 0-100, as well as areas of strength and improvement. Since January 2026, VSME reporting has been recognized as a valid reporting standard for the „Reporting» (REPO) indicator for companies with fewer than 1,000 employees—up to 100 points can be achieved if VSME is reported at both Basic and Comprehensive levels.

ZEROvia Methodology in Brief

Every ESG statement in ZEROvia answers four questions:

  1. Where does the statement come from? From a source in the Evidence Library or a confirmed self-declaration.
  2. How safe is the extraction? AI-extracted values receive a visible confidence indication.
  3. Who released them? External use only after human-in-the-loop approval.
  4. Where can she appear? Field-specific release for public profile, private reports, or internal use.

The ESG rating includes 48 questions, is SME-native and evidence-based: no score without source verification. VSME reporting combines AI extraction with an audit trail, human-in-the-loop approval, and GHG Scope 1+2. Methodology in detail: zerovia.ch/methodology.

Costs and effort

EcoVadis does not publish a price list. Annual fees depend on company size, plan level (Basic, Active, Corporate, Sustain), and the number of score shares with customers. Third-party research typically states annual fees for SMEs range from a few hundred to several thousand Euros per year, depending on the modules chosen, such as the Carbon Action Module. Additionally, there is the internal effort required to answer the questionnaire and gather supporting documents, which typically amounts to several person-days.

ZEROvia offers transparent SME subscriptions. The key difference lies less in the absolute price and more in the reuse effect: data captured in ZEROvia once answers bank, insurance, auditor, and customer inquiries from a single source. Current pricing: zerovia.ch/prices.

Data sovereignty and hosting

EcoVadis is a global network based in Paris and processes data in multiple jurisdictions. The scorecard is shared on the buyer network—this is the core of the business model. GDPR compliant from a data protection perspective, but data control is structurally with the rating provider, not the supplier.

ZEROvia exclusively hosts in Switzerland and is designed according to Swiss data protection law (FADP) as well as EU GDPR. AI processing is carried out with source binding, visible confidence, human-in-the-loop approval, and a complete audit trail. The SME remains the data owner at all times; data is released field by field.

When ZEROvia, when EcoVadis, when both

Choose EcoVadis if…

  • A specific major client explicitly requires an EcoVadis scorecard.
  • You must participate in an established global supplier rating network.
  • The external score is more important than one's own ESG data sovereignty.
